Black and White Kitchens

We just discovered HOUZZ and have been sorting through images and piecing together IDEABOOKS with glee until the wee hours of the morning!  The architectural drawings for our new condo are due in a few weeks so we are wildly brainstorming to finalize the layout of all the rooms (crafting room with a fishtank in a waterfall, anyone?).  I continue to be inspired by black and white.  Here are the inspiration photos for our soon-to-be kitchen:

what i love/what i’m taking:

  • black & white patterned wallpaper
  • black cabinets with wood floor
  • squarish island and base-white marble
  • heavy white molding
  • white flowers with white vase (simple yet provocative, even when fake)

what i love/what i’m taking:

  • 3 ornate, low hanging glass lights
  • glass doors on overhead cabinets
  • tile backsplash (instead of marble)
  • bright colored fruit in glass bowls

my husband is adding in a coffee/tea station, deeper drawers that store cooking utensils, and outlets that pop up and down built into the counters (all pieced together from HOUZZ!).

i used to think interior design was as stimulating as fingerprinting with pudding until one day when i was admiring my close friend’s extensive gardens and her intentional selection of every detail that occupies her space that i heard a voice in my head say, ‘i want to know the person who lives here.’  before that day, i had never connected someone’s living space with who they were as a person–interesting or otherwise.  now i am a believer: our exterior living space reflects our interior lives and, in the coaching world, tells us a tremendous amount about blocks in ourselves and our worlds.

what fun it is to observe the creations in your external world as a reflection of who you are.
